A routine tick chart is the ultimate tool.  Fully customisable for the child's needs, with an example to get you started.

Neurodiverse kids love to be able to see what they need to do. Their brains are wired to get to ‘end’ as quickly as possible, this is why they love a competition, to ‘win’, race and compete with a reward (which is often screen time). So let’s use that power for good!

Did you know that for ADHDers it's extraordinarily difficult (nearly impossible) to remember and retain ‘boring’ information?  A ND individual often has to RELEARN what has to be done EVERY time. The neural pathways form differently from an NT. Are you continually yelling “get in the shower”, “wash your hair”, ”don't clean the walls with my good shampoo!” (or is that just me?). It is as if your child has no idea that they need to do certain things even though it’s EXACTLY the same every day!

I have some good news for you, this little gem will save you a whole heap of yelling.

I like to involve my kids in the set-up process. This interests the child and makes it less boring - invite them to write the time, draw the picture and have some input into timing.

Test it out - don't laminate straight away! And then check in, “how did it go for you?” “do we need to make any changes?”.

Use stickers or ticks so your child feels empowered, laminate and use a whiteboard marker, whatever floats your boat. Just remember to CELEBRATE the successes, catch them being good, no matter how small.

It's all about connection, this is just the tool you need to facilitate building connection (less yelling), and more playful parenting. Make it a race, add in “oh wow, you have done so well tonight, we have time for a game of Spot It”.

ADHD’ers LOVE instant gratification… so use this!
